In a press release this week, John Cooper, Mayor of Nashville, announced that he’s on the hunt for young people proficient in social media. Cooper wants to raise awareness and involvement in local government through this program, called Know Your Nashville.

To that end, Cooper is looking for college students to make posts on Instagram and TikTok. He wants “to increase connectivity and awareness about the ‘Know Your Nashville’ campaign and local government.”

Who Can Apply?

This program is perfect for Music City young people trying to get their foot in the door of local government. In order to apply to be a Know Your Nashville Ambassador, you must be:

  • A student at Nashville State, Tennessee State University, Fisk University, or Belmont University
  • Between ages 18 and 24

What Does an Ambassador Do?

Ambassadors primarily use social media to get the community involved. But they will also be involved in other government work as well.

Ambassadors need to make one post on their Instagram or TikTok bi-weekly. They’ll also need to post 2-3 stories a week that promote the initiative. In addition, these young people will participate in important young adult focus groups.

Finally, ambassadors create Know Your Nashville events on their college campus, one of the most exciting ways to get involved. These ambassadors get to create ways for their peers to become more involved in local politics in a direct way. Local politics have a direct impact on everyone’s lives, including students. So this will make a big impact.

If you’re interested in getting involved in this initiative to increase your peers’ involvement in local government, fill out the Ambassadorship Application.
